Today's Gospel: John 6:60-69
Understanding the Eucharist is challenging, and we will never fully understand or appreciate this gift on this side of the veil. My prayer at the moment of elevation is always, “Jesus, I love You. Help my unbelief.” I want my belief to increase, so I give it to the Lord at every Mass.
While this teaching can indeed be difficult, I’d like to focus on the words from St. Peter:
“Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
For me, these words are a comforting balm and source of great inspiration. When I look back on my life and all the ways the Lord has sustained me, it is obvious: there is nowhere else to go. No one but the Father can provide the constant, merciful love and lavish grace that has carried me through. He has been there for me when nothing else in the world has satisfied me.
Growing up Catholic, I’ve always believed in the Eucharist because it’s what I’ve always done and it’s all I know. But as the years tick by, my mind and heart are stirred to learn more about the Eucharistic Jesus and to grow closer to Him. For even when I wasn’t active in my faith and a relationship with Him was a foreign concept for me, Jesus was there, waiting for me and calling me home.
If Jesus is who He says He is (and He is!) then indeed, where else would we want to go?
Ponder:
If you reflect on your life, can you identify times God's grace was undoubtedly at work? How did you respond?
Pray:
Lord, help us always to be mindful of Your abiding love and constant presence in the Eucharist and in our lives. Inspire our hearts to seek You always.
