How much freedom do we give? What lessons do we need to let our children learn on their own? How much do we need to instruct versus surrender? The dance can be quite stressful. In this Gospel, the Lord reveals to us His effective parenting strategy: > “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.” We are striving to show our children the way to ultimate joy through our correction and instruction. Just as God wills the very best things for our lives, He establishes boundaries and rules to help us reach that paradise. We, too, will complete joy for our children, and sometimes that looks like uncomfortable conversations, tears, and lessons learned along the way. Our children may be quick to tell us that it does not feel very loving but often return in gratitude for the guidance later in life.
