Reflect on the courage needed to follow Jesus in challenging times, inspired by a personal story of perseverance in a high school track race.

Today's Gospel: Mark 12:28-34

My oldest daughter competed in high school track. Once, she ran an 800-meter race and took a substantial lead in the first lap, but she started out too fast to pace herself. She stopped and bent over, looking nauseated and thinking that she couldn’t go on. Her dad yelled at her to keep going as her competitors approached. She straightened up and ran on before halting and bending over a second time, feeling again like she couldn’t continue. Still, her coaches and father cheered her on.

My daughter won that race, and some might say my daughter ran her heart out, but it took her heart, mind, and strength to cross the finish line. Her heart provided courage and pumped blood that allowed her long legs to eat up those 800 meters, and her mind conquered her self-doubt and temptation to quit. She mustered physical, mental, and emotional strength to run on when she wanted to collapse and watch the other runners pound past her. My daughter used everything she had to finish that race.

I think of my daughter’s race as I consider today’s Gospel. It takes our whole being to follow Jesus, especially when the track of our lives is challenging and our relationships are complicated. May we all run toward God with the same courage and commitment that my daughter showed that day and encourage others as my husband and her coaches encouraged her. In cultivating charitable thoughts and feelings toward ourselves and everyone, we can keep going despite challenges, fueled by God's Word and the Sacraments, loving God wholly and loving our neighbors, having faith that we can finish the race even when we feel like quitting.

Ponder:

When have I been all in for Christ, and when have I given up doing something for Him because it required too much of me?

Pray:

Lord, reign in our hearts and rule over our minds. Fill our souls with Your love and give us strength to follow You when the way is hard.

Pray Together:

Offer a morning prayer with your kids at breakfast or in the car, asking God to make you vessels of His love and mercy to pour out onto your neighbors today.
