Daily Gospel Reflection for August 1, 2022

Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21

Prior to today’s reading, we have the beheading of John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin. 

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself

And then—as any mom who has tried to tuck herself away in a secluded spot knows—all the kids found Him.

But rather than rail at them and demand to have His chance to grieve, we learn that

His heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.

I need to sit with that for a while: When Jesus needed “alone time,” and the crowds found Him, He served them.

And again: When Jesus specifically went away, sending the signal “give me some space,” the group not only tracked Him down, but even put their demands upon Him. And He acquiesced. He couldn’t help it.

There’s more. (Of course there is.)

The disciples point out that they’re in the middle of nowhere and dinnertime is approaching. Big crowd at hand. No food. Let’s send them away, Jesus.

Jesus isn’t limited by the decision analysis of these practical people: “Bring them to me,” He says.

Once again, though scripture doesn’t say it, His heart was moved.

A bunch of hungry kids: What mom among us doesn’t have a similar story?

Then He takes what they have—paltry though it is—and He makes it not just enough, but an overabundance. There are leftovers.

When we give God what we have, however seemingly small, He transforms it. And sometimes, what we think we need isn’t at all what God has in mind for us.

Not that I’ll remember that when I’m tucked away in my bedroom trying to find some silence.

Ponder:

What small thing can you give God today? How can you remain open to the blessing He has for you?

Pray:

Jesus, you get me. You know me better than I know myself. Guide me to Your perfect will for this moment, and grant me the grace to cooperate with it.
