Today's Gospel: Matthew 16:13-23
Out of all the disciples, Peter is the one with whom I can connect the most. In today’s Gospel, we are given an image of Peter taking Jesus aside and pretty much demanding that what Jesus foretold of His death would not come to pass. The response from Jesus may seem harsh at first, but when you stop and think about it, Peter stands as a threat to God’s will not only for the life and death of Jesus but for our salvation.
Peter shows his love for Jesus by vowing to do anything to protect the one he cared for so deeply. God feels the same way about us. When we try to take control or assert our desires over what we feel God calling us toward, we are, in a sense, posing a threat to His will for our lives. It will benefit us and be pleasing to God if we pause in those moments of wanting to take control and allow time for the Spirit to enter our thoughts, providing the wisdom we need to move forward.
Ponder:
How many times have I stood in the way of God’s will for my life?
Pray:
Heavenly Father, thank You for your Son, Jesus, who died so that I may live. I ask for wisdom in following Your will and grace in the moments when I seek my own way. May Your love and light be all I need to fill my soul.
