Today's Gospel: Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14
Here’s the thing: If I lost one out of a hundred things—chocolate bars, books, coffee cups—I’d be okay with that. The ratio isn’t bad, after all. One percent loss? Most of us would be okay with that.
But we’re not dealing with the usual. When it’s something we cherish and value, suddenly one percent isn’t as easily acceptable.
The 100 number is a bit ridiculous, and maybe that’s also part of the point. We are ridiculous. We read the story about losing a sheep and think, “What’s the big deal?” We aren’t farmers. And really, would you miss ONE? Really?
Was it important enough to leave the others unattended and possibly in danger to find the lost one?
That’s when it starts to get puzzling. That’s when I start to think that, once again, Jesus is smacking me.
If I’m reading this right, Jesus is saying that every ONE of us is important enough to pursue. Every ONE of us is worth dying for. Every ONE of us is worth risking life and limb, safety and security.
Ponder:
Today, how can I pursue God with the same energy I pursue other things in my life?
Pray:
Lord, You pursue me and You never stop. Guide me to Your loving arms and the trust that You will always be there for me.
