Today's Gospel: Luke 9:7-9

Not only did I get COVID-19, but I found my COVID-19. I gained exactly 19 pounds during quarantine by anxiety-eating my way through the uncertainty of it all. I’ve been trying to lose weight ever since.

“Trying” is actually too active of a word. I’ve been THINKING about trying to lose weight, and have pursued all different avenues in the process.

Every time I hear about a new trick or diet, I get intrigued. I spend time on the internet learning more about it.

I always discover, however, that no such trick or magic solution exists. It all comes down to change.

If I’m ever going to reap the reward of losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle, I have to change what I eat, add exercise, and stick to a consistent sleep schedule.

That’s when my desire gets derailed. Instead, I sit and wait for the next great idea that doesn’t require me to abstain from sweets or give up sitting on the couch, binge-watching Netflix.

“Who then is this about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see him. Luke 9:9

Herod Antipas was the same way. He was intrigued by both John the Baptists and Jesus. There had to have been a part of Herod that yearned to be a better person to reap the reward that both John and Jesus talked about.

But when Herod discovered it required change on his part, the yearning ended there. He didn’t want to let go of his brother Philip’s wife, whom he stole. He didn’t want to give up his self-indulgent life-style and decadent ways. The required changes were too much for him, and his desire got derailed.

Those of us who know Jesus are constantly intrigued by what He says. May the reward of what He offers inspire us to overcome our resistance to change, so we truly conform and walk in His ways.

Ponder:

Have I developed some bad habits that God is calling me to change? Can I lean into Him for the help and inspiration I need to implement those changes?

Pray:

God of True Inspiration, motivate me to make whatever changes I need to so I walk more closely with You.
