Today's Gospel: Luke 14:1-6

Imagine, if you will, a dinner scene. The dinner guests include your family and friends. The guests are on different sides of values and morals you hold dear. During what could become a heated conversation, you look over and notice one of your family members looking ill and afraid to react.

Your compassionate heart tells you to speak up and offer assistance to the sickly dinner guest, but your fear of angering many at the table by interrupting them causes you to pause. Now, take your mind back to this Gospel passage and insert Jesus at the head of your table. How are you going to react now?

No word was spoken between Jesus and the man with dropsy; however, Jesus knew he needed to be healed. Putting compassion ahead of the feelings of the Pharisees enabled Jesus to see the man’s dropsy and heal him. Controversy is never fun, but it is part of life. Jesus was faced with many controversial moments and put compassion before all else in each one.

Perhaps prayer can be a way to bring people in our minds, hearts, and dinner tables to God and see things with Jesus's compassionate eye.

Ponder:

Next time I am in a situation where controversy takes precedence, can I react as compassionately as Jesus?

Pray:

Loving God, help me see everyone with a compassionate heart, especially in times and situations not wholly aligned with my thinking.
