Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

Fourteen years ago, I had the beautiful privilege of being pregnant during the Advent season. I was anticipating a Christmas baby, so I could not help but think a lot about the Blessed Mother and wonder what her life was like before her Babe was born.

I imagined some of the events leading up to Jesus’ birth, such as the Annunciation, which we reflect upon in today’s Gospel. I envisioned Mary and Joseph in their home in Nazareth, where Joseph was building a cradle, and Mary sewed swaddling clothes for her baby boy. And in the quiet of her home, in the depths of her heart, Mary prayerfully watched and waited for the Messiah to come. Because she knew the baby that dwelled within her womb was her Messiah, too.

All those years ago, as I anticipated my own son being born just shortly before Christmas, Mary’s presence kept me company. She taught me how to wait in prayer and be attentive to the Lord’s movements in my heart and in my home. She also taught me how to slow down and consider what really mattered as I prepared for the birth of my son and the birth of hers.

Today’s Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception gives all of us a lovely pause in the middle of the busyness of Advent. It invites us to consider how we are living out these Advent days. Are we caught up in the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations? Or are we creating space in our day to watch and wait, like Mary did, for the coming of Christ?

Today, let us turn to Mary and ask her to show us how to watch and wait for the Lord so our hearts are truly prepared to welcome the Babe on Christmas.

Ponder:

Is there something on my to-do list that I could delete in order to make more time for prayer?

Pray:

O Mary, I turn to you today and ask for your intercession as I prepare my heart and home for the coming of your Son on Christmas.
