Today's Gospel: John 1:1-18

It is still dark outside, and I arise to find the house still and quiet. Soon, this space will be bustling with excitement, so I am grateful for a few peaceful moments before the chaos ensues.

I shuffle to the kitchen to brew the coffee before settling into my favorite spot in the whole house. The spot right in front of the Christmas tree.

The soft glow of the tree’s twinkle lights illuminates the dark room. And I am reminded of that first Christmas morning, when another Light shone in the darkness. (John 1:5)

I wonder about those early morning hours in the stable when “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (John 1:14) When the sweet cry of a baby pierced the quiet of dawn. When “the true light” came into our dark world, and darkness could no longer overcome us.

Catholic tradition has us genuflect at the utterance of the Incarnation. Because the moment was so holy, it deserves such reverence.

And yet, the moment was so hidden, only a select few were there.

What was it like for Mary and Joseph to be the only two people in the world who knew that the Savior had arrived? Or what was it like to be a humble shepherd and counted among those God let in on the secret that His Son was born?

Christmas started out quiet, in the most unlikely place to find our salvation and our refuge from this cold, cruel world. And yet, it is the perfect place to find the Prince of Peace. In the early morning hours of Christmas, when all was calm and bright. And a thrill of hope penetrated the weary world.

Ponder:

How will I reverence the birth of Christ today?

Pray:

O Jesus, the Word Made Flesh, come and dwell in my heart this Christmas. Fill me and my loved ones with Your grace, truth, peace, and joy.
