Today's Gospel: Luke 1:57-66
Naming this child went against the norm, and when the divergence from what was socially acceptable was supported, caused amazement in the community that someone would dare to speak a truth that was not in line with their standards.
It takes courage and confidence to speak up for something that may not be well received. Our action may cause unrest in others, especially when we speak gently a truth they were not expecting to hear.
Truth, like a thought, is a living thing. To quote Elizabeth Scalia (7/29/2024 social media post), “A thought is a thing, a living thing that moves and shifts. Even as you try to pin it down, it grows and changes, sometimes morphing in surprising ways.”
This child named John would grow and change his world, morphing the current norms into something greater. His ministry gained a life of its own to prepare a new and surprising truth though the life of Jesus.
Ponder:
Can you recall a time when you knew that speaking the truth would cause unrest? How did you manage the situation?
Pray:
Heavenly Father, let Your hand guide me to be unafraid to share Your truths with gentleness in a way that is not perceived as combative by my neighbor. Let my mouth be opened to speak Your words.
