Today's Gospel: John 20:1a and 2-8

It’s interesting to reflect on Jesus’ death and Resurrection today, when we began the season celebrating His birth just two days ago. It is quite fitting, however, to take a deeper look at the body language of Simon Peter and “the other disciple whom Jesus loved” as the Christmas season continues.

In today’s Gospel, Simon Peter and the other disciple almost seem to be racing one another as they rush to the tomb. That alone is worth deeper reflection: they were clearly in a hurry as they rushed to Jesus’ tomb.

Once they arrive at the tomb, the difference in their actions is also worth reflecting on. The other disciple stops once he reaches the tomb. Did he wait outside, taking a moment to catch his breath and prepare his heart? Simon Peter, on the other hand, immediately enters the tomb to inspect the burial cloths. The other disciple then, upon entering the tomb, “saw and believed.”

Blessed are those who, like us, have not seen and yet believe. This Christmas season, may we run with zeal after the newborn King!

Ponder:

Do we seek Jesus with the same eagerness, the same intensity as Simon Peter and the other disciple in today's Gospel?

Pray:

Lord, You are the Prince of Peace and Light of the World. Help our unbelief.
