Today's Gospel: Luke 10:13-16

Do you ever just find yourself so frustrated, so overwhelmed, so beyond-your-patience that you throw up your hands and turn to the Bible, only to find a reading like today’s? “OK, God. Oooookaaaaaaay.”

Any time Jesus starts with a “Woe to you” message, I do the mental equivalent of “Here we go again,” nearly tuning out any meaning it may have for me. You’d almost think I am still a teenager. You’d be pretty much spot on with that assessment. Obedience and submission aren’t my strong suits … and I don’t think I’m unique in that.

But if I listen beyond my natural inclination to disregard authority — if I humble myself and admit I (ahem) don’t (cough) know it all (gag), then … uh … well.

Today’s Gospel strikes a chord. Do I listen? No, really. Do. I. Listen? Am I tuning in to the nudges of the Holy Spirit, the graces of God, the words of Jesus? Maybe it’s something as small as pausing in my whatever-I’m-doing (insert laundry, dishes, writing, work, breathing, playing on my phone).

That pause, brief as a breath, can be the opening He needs to work in me. In that small space, there’s room for infinite goodness, for miracles, and, most amazingly, for God to work. He’s doing mighty deeds, but I may miss them oh so easily.

Can I get past myself — my opinions, my busyness, my duties — and subject myself, listen, and act? With the grace of God, yes. And maybe, too, with the little push in the backside Jesus gives me in this Gospel.

Ponder:

When can you carve out a quiet time to sit with God and listen to His voice? How can you acknowledge — and act upon — the mighty deeds He’s doing in your life right now?

Pray:

Oh my Jesus, gather me in Your arms and deal with me patiently. Guide me closer to You, so that I may be obedient and open to Your will.

Woe to who? Jesus speaks strong words in today’s Gospel, but there’s hope in them.
